Help needs ideas

It all started with buying a new X-ray apparatus for a hospital in Zimbabwe and a portable equipment set for a Columbian dentist in 1986. Back then Terra Tech took its first steps in participating in humanitarian aid. At that time committed citizens from Marburg and Wetzlar (both located in the center of the German state of Hessen) joined forces in order to support projects all over the world. Their aim was and still is to relieve human distress by providing medical supplies.

Over 450 projects in 54 countries already realized
More than 30 years later TERRA TECH can look back at numerous successfully realized projects in Africa, South America, the Middle East, in Asia and also Eastern Europe. Over 450 projects in 54 countries is what makes us a little proud, but more than this it makes us be grateful – for your support, which was carried out by sponsors, donors and volunteers. Without their help it wouldn’t have been possible for us to make all of those projects happen. Not only did our projects grow in numbers, but we also extended our range of tasks. Today we provide, for instance, in the fields of emergency aid and development cooperation:

- secure spaces for street children in India
- disaster preparedness for people in Nepal
- computer and agricultural trainings in Kenia
- food security for garbage collector families in Mexico

Even if the way TERRA TECH is helping changed over time, the goals remained the same – TERRA TECH aims for supporting people who suffer from poverty and distress. In this context our motto is “helping people to help themselves“. For us this means supporting people up to the point where they are able to improve their living conditions in the long-term by themselves – without becoming dependent on the help of others. In doing so we are being supported by our members and donors, as well as numerous foundations, the German government and befriended partner organizations.

Local partners – the basis of cooperation
TERRA TECH’s work rests most of all on the reliability and the commitment of experienced, local partners on-site, who are familiar with language, culture and the political conditions of their countries. Our local partners (non-governmental organizations, self-help groups, communities, hospitals, etc.) are highly regarded within their countries – their personalities and professional expertise are the basis of our cooperation. While carrying out a project, a significant part of TERRA TECH’s responsibility rests upon their shoulders. Due to their daily work on-site they are familiar with the local people’s needs and problems. Many ideas in fact have their origin within the immediate target group. Realizing these ideas enables us to make sure that project planning and realizing always aims on local needs. If we send additional staff it is only for advising our partners, to coordinate and evaluate our projects and for capacity building. The regular trainings for our partners include international standards of humanitarian aid (for example: SPHERE). Knowing about these standards ensures the project’s quality and also enables our partners to cooperate with other international organizations. The provided knowledge strengthens the local partner’s individual responsibility – which allows them to cooperate with organizations from the Global North in a partnership of equals. By following our guidelines TERRA TECH was able to successfully carry out numerous projects which opened up new perspectives to many suffering people.
