Our local partner in India AIILSG is anticipating very negative consequences for children due to the corona crisis. Around the world it’s mostly the elderly being harmed by the virus. However, in India, the young are particularly vulnerable due to extremely poor health, malnutrition and higher infection rates. Ever since the outbreak of COVID-19 the violence against children is increasing.

Some sources cite an increase in the consumption of child pornography by 95 percent. Search for videos of violence against children increased by 200 percent.

Challenge and innovative concepts
AIILSG did not cancel any of the projects due to corona. All of the activities were adapted so they can continue under the new restrictions. Due to the high population density in parts of the country, the social workers who look after disadvantaged families can take care of them without violating the curfew. Social workers are people’s main connection to governmental services such as health care. With the help of mobile phones, many families have a relatively cheap communication channel. This way, some of the issues can be identified quickly. The team of AIILSG uses the corona crisis to expand the team’s capacity and develop innovations. “They have created easy to understand, simple, innovative posters and cards about COVID-19. Those can be understood even by children and illiterate people,” explains Frank Beutell of TERRA TECH. On these cards the topics of corona risk, hygiene procedures and other health measures are explained in a simple, yet effective way.

Help for nomadic families
TERRA TECH in co-operation with AIILSG has started a project targetting nomadic families. Now they are in need of urgent support. “Families in the proposed area are facing a severe food crisis. They are starving and urgently need help,” says Beutell. A local AIILSG team has identified 190 families who really do need food. The first 70 families have been taken care of for 15 days. For just 7,50 euros a single family can be supplied with: 5kg of rice, 10kg of cereals for the production of rotis (a type of bread), 2kg of pigeon peas and 1l of cooking oil and spices. Another 120 families are still in need of support.

Actions such as these are essential in curbing the spread of the virus across the country. Support us with your donation!
