Ledya Pekandy comes from Mossul and now lives in Ankawa, a district of Erbil in Iraq. For two years she worked as an IT assistant, a job she got through a friend. Meanwhile she doesn't work in this job anymore. She points out: "It frustrated me, my morale was bad."

Ledya is one of several students supported by the Chaldean Church and TERRA TECH. Like others she was expelled from her home town by the Islamic state (IS). Arriving in Kirkuk the students got help to integrate into the local universities and continue their studies. The support also included save housing, free meals and good learning conditions. The idea of the project was to provide a save harbour for the young people and keep them in the area. Following that approach they should become able to help to rebuild the country as well trained professionals once the armed conflicts would be settled.

Ledya is excited about her time as a student: "It was the most beautiful thing I have done in my life.

Studying in Kirkuk helped her despite all difficult circumstances. "I did that for a better future. When I studied, I felt how there is something good in my life and that the difficult circumstances have not been in vain.” Ledya is proud of what she has accomplished. And rightly so. When she lived on her own in Kirkuk, she had to adapt to the situation in the city and carry a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders. A shocking moment for the students was when the IS entered Kirkuk and one of the female dorms. Eight women survived miraculously hiding for hours under their beds. At that time Ledya was in a neighbouring house.

In the near future Ledya wants to do her Master's in Communication Management and find a good company or organisation to work in. "I hope to find work so that my studies were helpful and I can forget the hard times."
