Corona virus - Ethopia
In Ethiopia, the corona virus is exacerbating a threatening situation. Ethiopia is one of the East African countries which were badly affected by the worst locust plague in the past 25 years. Many small farmers lost all of their produce.
To provide needed help TERRA TECH and local partner Kelem have started with an aid program at the beginning of this year. We were able to gather more than 50 000 euros in donations for emergency food aid. This aid has been cut short. Due to travel bans within the country, Kelem was only able to distribute the aid supplies, such as seeds, with a long time delay. Luckily, the restrictions have now been eased. Thus Kelem was able to reach and help 842 households. Strict Corona precautionary measures were put in place: Helpers always have to wear gloves and masks, and beneficiaries are asked to wash their hands. The elderly receive their rations at home. To disperse the number of people in one place, several distribution points were set up.
The distribution of supplies is becoming possible again, but there is still no way to fight locusts effectively. An intervention is crucial since in districts of Kallu, Tehuledere and Ambassel, the number of locusts is increasing. In some parts, all of the mature plants are destroyed, whilst young plants and seedlings are also being eaten away. The UN is warning about the possibility of 24 million people in East Africa being unable to feed their families. In Ethiopia, the small farmers who have already lost their crops have little hope for the future. Many other people are affected by curfews which have economic consequences, especially for those who work as day laborers.
Actions such as these are essential in curbing the spread of the virus across the country. Support us with your donation!
