Since the middle of June 2016 and in cooperation with our partner Development and Health World Wide (DAHW) we are involved in taking care of leprosy victims in the district of Menz Weya in Ethiopia. Establishing a microcredit organization and promoting income-generating measures increase the victim's financial independency and support their social acceptance.

Every year several hundred thousand people fall ill with the infectious disease leprosy. Every tenth patient is a child. Especially in poor countries the consequences of falling ill with leprosy are severe – quite often the victims are stigmatized and excluded from society. This is why we started working in Ethiopia.

Using funds sponsored by the Germany's relief Coalition (Aktion Deutschland Hilft) the victims founded a microcredit organization. Members of the this organization save money collectively and grant loans in order to support income generating measures like buying agricultural tools, machines and seeds, or support small businesses. These measures enable infected people to find their way back to financial independency. In addition, not only their financial situation changes, but also the victims benefit from an improved self-esteem and higher social acceptance. In order to ensure the project's sustainability we are establishing trainings containing the topics 'awareness for money' and 'how to manage saved funds’.

Currently our directly affected target groups consists of fifty leprosy victims – twenty women and thirty men. But of course also their families benefit from the victim’s trainings and the fact, that the infected are creating income themselves now and are not completely dependent on others anymore. Consequently the indirectly affected target group sums up to about 200 people. Furthermore, establishing income generating measures leads to a wider range of products on the local markets; a fact also the local community benefits from.
