Our local partner All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) has been committed to helping the people in slums of Mumbai for years. The ones who need especially need care are the street children. Them, along with their families are marginalized. One of them is Ashaya. She tells us about her life.

My name is Ashaya. Me and my family moved from the countryside to the big city in Mumbai with a dream of making a better life. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. We didn’t get a nice house. The five of us live in a tiny hut. Just like our neighbours. Inside it’s cramped. There is barely any space to play. Cooking, eating and bathing are usually done outside on the streets. Outside it’s often chaotic and noisy. There are only a few toilets, meaning we often have to relieve ourselves in a corner, which smells terrible. In order to get the drinking and cooking water, we have to walk far away. The water is often brown and doesn’t smell well. Many people, especially children, are often sick. A lot of my friends have to help make money for their families. I know some who have been seriously injured during work. Many children only go to school for a short time or don’t start with school at all.

Fun, games and possibilities
But it’s not all bad. I have been going with my friends to a “Learning with fun center” of the All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG). There we draw, paint and craft pottery as much as we like. Sometimes we come up with stories we tell each other. It’s great. We have a lot of fun and laugh all the time. Social workers educate us on topics such as hygiene, healthy eating habits and health through puppet shows and communal chants, which are also fun. There I learned how important it is to always carefully wash your hands. I also told my parents about this. The social workers also helped my parents register me and my siblings for school. I am allowed to go there and I will start soon. I’m so excited. I hope I’ll meet new friends there. I must try my best at school because I want to learn a lot to earn my own money later.

Extending the aid
AIILSG wants to offer more to street children. For this a classroom on wheels should be set up. This way, children whose families are often forced to move and look for new places to sleep can be reached. To accomplish the purchase of a scooter equipped with all learning and play materials around 5000 Euros are needed..
