Caused by the climate change and alongside heavy, seasonal rain falls in Western Kenya, the dry seasons changed: They became longer and more powerful. The biggest part of Kenya’s population is strongly dependent on their agriculture and suffers a lot from these new and powerful dry seasons – But by building a micro dam we can ensure the water supply even in times of little to no rainfall.

Since November 2014 and basing on our emergency-project we are building a micro dam in Ahero, Kenya. In order to complete this task we joined forces with the local population, our local partner and the BMZ. The dam will be about 1 – 2 meters high and dam up water in an artificial reservoir in times of heavy rainfalls. This measure will ensure a higher local groundwater level even during dry seasons.

No water will be taken from the artificial reservoir directly. Instead, water will be taken from wells which will be at least 150 meters away from the reservoir. This approach ensures that the sand layers will serve as a natural water filter and will permanently provide clean drinking water to the local population. Furthermore the reservoir will function as a fish breeding pool and offer an additional source of income to the locals.

Self-managed schooling center
The construction of the micro dam will supplement an already existing schooling center. Alongside the improved water supply the dam will enable the local population to provide agricultural training courses all-year-long. The schooling center was founded over five years ago and is self-managed by a community based organization. In order to improve the training courses we added the construction of a drip irrigation system and of greenhouses to the project. This will reduce water consumption in the long term and make it possible to illustrate water-saving measures quite easily.
