Serious gender inequalities are prevalent in Sierra Leone. They suppress women in society, politics and work. Just under 10% of women have completed their secondary or higher education.

The education of girls is considered to be unnecessary. Families must bear the school costs and thus many parents choose not to enroll their daughters for financial reasons. School attendance is often interrupted by abuse, child marriages and early pregnancies. This has a serious impact on the participation of women in political decision-making and business. Lack of education or training means they are excluded from these areas. This means women are financially dependent on their husbands or families for their lifetime and are not allowed to decide on their future themselves.

Together with our partner SEND, we want to tackle these inequalities. A project started in December 2019 aims to increase the participation of girls and women in education and political world. With a program called “Gender Model Family” aims to break up existing gender roles in individual households and educating families about the equality of their daughters and sons. Its goal is to also increase the participation of women in political committees. They can help reduce gender inequalities in the education system and strengthen the role of women in society. The program is carried out in the two districts Kenema and Kailahun.
